FIRST steps have been taken in the legal action by lower Ormeau Road residents in Belfast alleging false imprisonment and unlawful detention in their homes at this year's 12th of July Orange march.

Writs were lodged in the Northern Ireland High Court yesterday afternoon by solicitors for the residents against the RUC Chief Constable, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the British Ministry of Defence and the Orange Order. No date has been fixed for the hearing.

The residents are also said to be seeking a court injunction to prevent a repetition of what they call a "curfew" at another Orange parade, planned for August 10th.
