Official shot dead by sniper

St Petersburg - A sniper shot dead the deputy governor of Russia's second city, St Petersburg, yesterday, the mayor's office said in a statement. Mr Mikhail Manevich (36), was travelling with his wife in a car when eight shots from an automatic rifle, apparently equipped with a telescopic sight, penetrated the roof of his vehicle, killing him and slightly wounding his wife, it said.
