RTÉ presenter Miriam O’Callaghan has ruled herself out of running as a candidate in next year’s presidential election.

Following media speculation over the weekend that O’Callaghan would run for the position she denied the move this afternoon on her twitter account.

“To avoid this presidential story getting out of control, I have just issued a statement confirming I will NOT be a candidate in the 2011 elec [sic]”, she tweeted.

An emailed statement also released this afternoon said that while Ms O’Callaghan “is delighted and honoured that some people are considering her as a potential presidential candidate she would like to stress that she will not be standing for the position, independent or otherwise, in the upcoming election in 2011”.
