Windhoek - Mr Sam Nujoma and his SWAPO party won this week's presidential and parliamentary elections in Namibia, the independent Electoral Commission of Namibia said yesterday. The ECN chief spokesman, Mr Peter Mietzner, said Mr Nujoma (70) had so far taken 73 per cent of the vote, and could, with more than 60 per cent of all ballots counted, "no longer be beaten" by rival candidates.

Mr Nujoma, president since independence in 1990, was running for a third term. His South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) was also leading with 73 per cent in the parliamentary poll, putting the party in a "position to declare victory," Mr Mietzner said.
