Fine Gael leader Mr Michael Noonan was hit in the face with a custard pie while canvassing in Boyle, Co Roscommon.
According to reports, Mr Noonan was hit with the pie as he met voters by a woman wearing a balaclava.
She is believed to be from the Ballymoate area of Co Sligo.
Fianna Fáil leader Mr Bertie Ahern said the pie attack on the Fine Gael leader was part of the nasty elements in politics.
