Stockholm - The Indian economist Amartya Sen has won the 1998 Nobel Economics prize for his contributions to welfare economics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said yesterday. Dr Sen's work as a key partner with the UN Development Programme in preparing its annual human development report had contributed to the theory of social choice, definitions of welfare and poverty, and studies of famine, the academy said in its citation.
