Mexico City - Octavio Paz, the Mexican poet and essayist who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1990, has died at the age of 84 after a long battle with cancer.

As tributes poured in from around the world yesterday, Mexican radio and television stations read his haunting poems on air, in remembrance of a man hailed by many as the country's finest writer ever.
