Cairo - Egypt said yesterday it had scrapped controversial plans to place a golden capstone on the Cheops Pyramid at the climax to a millennium concert.

Opposition newspapers accused the Culture Minister, Mr Farouk Hosni, of involvement in a Masonic-Zionist conspiracy to lay claim to the pyramids. Some members of parliament had also complained of "foreign art" at Egypt's New Year celebration and expressed concern about possible damage to the pyramids.
