The new head of the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) has called on the Government to commission a comprehensive report on the role employers, unions and the media can play in tackling illiteracy.

Ms Mary Maher, director of the Dublin Adult Learning Centre, who was elected chairwoman of NALA at its a.g.m. at the weekend, said: "In the light of the recent British Moser report published during the week, it is vital that the Irish Government respond in a similar fashion to overcome our literacy problem."
