The Government has approved the appointment of Chief Supt Eamon Keating, the academic co-ordinator at the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, as Assistant Commissioner. It is expected he will be posted to Galway as commander of the Garda's western region.

Chief Supt Keating has been in charge of the Garda College for almost four years and served previously for most of his career in the south-east. He is from Clonmel, Co Tipperary, and is married with four children.

The Minister for Justice, Mr O'Donoghue, yesterday also ratified the promotion of Supts Austin McNally of the National Drugs Bureau, Kevin Ludlow of Nenagh, Co Tipperary, and Michael Finnegan of Dundalk, Co Louth, as chief superintendents.

Their postings take effect this month.
