It may have taken until the eleventh count to bring all five of the West Belfast Sinn Féin candidates home, but once again the party's careful vote management strategies have paid off - despite the absence of Gerry Adams.

Paul Maskey and Jennifer McCann both improved their tally of first preference votes from 2007 and were elected on the first count.

Fra McCann made it on the tenth count, and Sue Ramsey - who saw her personal vote drop - was elected on the eleventh count, alongside Pat Sheehan, the former IRA prisoner who spent 55 days on hunger strike in the Maze in 1981.

Mr Sheehan replaced Mr Adams, now TD for Louth, in the race.

It was thought that Alex Attwood of the SDLP could be forced to battle it out with the DUP's Brian Kingston for the last seat, but Mr Attwood's vote improved this time and he was elected on the tenth count.

Just as before, the constituency remains entirely nationalist.
