Racing:Nathaniel won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes from 6-5 favourite Workforce as Rewilding fell and was immediately put down in a race of triumph and tragedy at Ascot.

Nathaniel, the 11-2 chance, was supplemented at a cost of £75,000 on Monday and that gamble was rewarded as William Buick rode him out for a two-length success.

Last year's Derby and Arc hero Workforce drifted left in the closing stages and that cost him any chance of winning the race for Michael Stoute. Aidan O’Brien’s St Nicholas Abbey, ridden by his son Joseph, came home third in the five horse race.

The Mahmood Al Zarooni-trained Rewilding broke a cannon-bone and had to be put down immediately. Dettori was helped back to the jockeys' room but did not appear to be badly hurt.

Gosden said: "I attended the horse with the lad. He just put his leg down wrong and the cannon-bone snapped clean in two.

"I've seen it happen with a horse galloping in a paddock and they feel nothing. The vet was on hand as we gave the horse a final munch of grass and he dealt with it immediately.''

He added of Nathaniel: "It was an intelligent ride by William, and I left it completely up to him how to ride the race.

"He let him stride on, which was not ideal, but then again Workforce would have been better if they had gone a pace. This horse is getting better and better, and showed it today.

"My inclination is to take him straight for the Arc, with perhaps a racecourse gallop beforehand.''

Nathaniel was introduced at 10-1 by Sky Bet in their Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe market following his victory but quickly cut him to 7-1.

Matt Doyle of Sky Bet said: “Nathaniel is Arc bound and has been removed from the St Leger betting having become the first three-year-old since Alamshar in 2003 to beat his elders in the King George.”
