Gardaí have begun a murder investigation following the discovery of a body in a house in Clontarf which was destroyed by fire last night.

It is understood that gardaí discovered the body while they were examining the scene of the fire at a property at Seafield Road East.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 3am, was extinguished by members of Dublin Fire Brigade.

The identity and sex of the deceased has not yet been established and the State Pathologist's Office has been notified.

A 38-year-old man was detained shortly after the fire was discovered and is being detained at Raheny Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Following the discovery of the body, the investigation was upgraded from an inquiry into suspected arson to a full-scale murder investigation.
