Three teenage students had to be winched by helicopter off a Wicklow mountain yesterday after they were hurt. They were included in a group of 120 boys and girls from a Dublin school who were on an outing in Glendalough Valley together with a large group of teachers.

The three teenagers – one girl and two boys – sustained lower-leg injuries in separate accidents on the rough terrain approaching Glenealo Bridge at the back of the Glendalough valley. One suffered a bad laceration while the other two had injuries that suggested broken or badly sprained ankles.

The Dublin and Wicklow Mountain Rescue team and Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue team were called out at 12.30pm, reaching the scene soon after 1pm.

All three were treated by medics on the hillside and the assistance of the Irish Coast Guard helicopter was sought to evacuate them to safety. The injured students were winched up to the helicopter and they were taken to Dublin airport, where a waiting ambulance took them to hospital.
