A motorist who admitted causing the death of a 64-year-old mother of nine was given a 12-month suspended sentence at Dundalk Circuit Court yesterday.

David Cunningham (36), Congress Avenue, Drogheda, a father of five, had been remanded for two weeks pending sentence after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Mrs Alice Josie Carolan at Tullyallen, Drogheda, on February 1st, 2000.

The court had heard the victim's family "strongly believed" their mother would not want the defendant jailed, as he was the father of children.

Judge Raymond Groarke noted there was no evidence to suggest drink had played a part in the dangerous driving.
