More people taking multiple holidays

The number of adults taking two or more package holidays each year has increased significantly, according to a new survey.

The poll, conducted on behalf of TGI Surveys, shows that the numbers taking two or more package holidays in a 12-month period has risen by 12 per cent in the Republic and 17 per cent in the North over the past three years.

The survey also found an increase in the number of adults taking holidays generally.

In the past three years, this figure has grown by 2 per cent in the South and 6 per cent in the North - the equivalent of an extra 72,000 holiday-makers.

The stronger economy is cited as the main reason for the increase in both jurisdictions.

Bad weather has also prompted more people to head for sunnier climes.

The survey of 5,000 people North and South showed that the biggest increase was among the older age groups, who have the time and money to fund more than one break.

Holiday destinations are also changing, the survey suggests. The number of people from Northern Ireland who choose to holiday within the British Isles has declined by 14 per cent since 1999, while visitors to the rest of Europe have risen by 23 per cent over the same period.

In the Republic, the trend is the same, with an even greater increase in visitors to the rest of Europe.

The number of Northern Ireland holiday-makers travelling to destinations across the rest of the world has increased by 10 per cent over the last three years. In the Republic, the numbers of those travelling further afield have increased by 23 per cent.

The survey's authors suggest that the similarity of the findings strengthens the argument that the two jurisdictions should be treated as one in tourism marketing terms.
