More than 21,000 new homes were completed in the first three months of 2006, more than for the entire 12 months of 1993, according to new figures released today.
Minister of State for Housing and Urban Renewal Noel Ahern today said 21,894 units were built nationwide.
In Dublin, 5,139 units were completed, followed by Cork with 1,544, Galway with 1,126 and Kildare boasting 1,117.
"These results demonstrate that the Government measures introduced in recent years have continued to pave the way for strong housing supply which is needed to meet the unprecedented demand underpinned by both strong population and economic growth," Mr Ahern.
Last year 80,957 new units were completed.
New house registrations for the first three months of 2006 also show an increase of 15 per cent nationally, 13.6 per cent in Dublin and 7.2 per cent in the Greater Dublin Area over the same period in 2005.
