Paschal Mooney, an unsuccessful Fianna Fáil candidate in the European elections last year, has been re-elected to the Seanad.

Mr Mooney was elected on the first count of a vote in a byelection caused by the death of Senator Peter Callanan last October.

A total of 206 TDs and Senators voted.

He will sit on the agricultural panel.

Mr Mooney, from Co Leitrim, was a senator for 20 years before narrowly losing his seat in 2007.

A journalist and broadcaster, he contested the European elections in the Ireland North West constituency in June.

He received the unanimous nomination of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party to stand in today’s byelection at Leinster House, according to the party’s press office.
