London - Free and fair elections in Zimbabwe were still possible, despite the campaign of violence which has seen 23 opposition supporters murdered in the last few weeks, British Foreign Office Minister Mr Peter Hain said yesterday. Mr Hain told the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee that the key issue would be the freedom of Zimbabwean monitors and international observers to inspect arrangements for polling.
He said that Britain would not insist on being represented in Commonwealth and EU observer groups, in order to deny President Robert Mugabe the opportunity to use the issue to stoke up further anti-British feeling.
