A married couple from Northern Ireland were today found safe and well after having been missing for more than 24 hours on a Scottish mountain range.

The couple from County Antrim had failed to return from the Cairngorms after setting off at 8 a.m. yesterday.

The 36-year-old man and his 33-year-old wife were located by members of the Braemar mountain rescue team.

The pair were discovered at about 9.30 a.m. and taken to the Glenmore Lodge mountaineering centre near Aviemore to be assessed.

Sergeant Michael MacLennan of Northern Constabulary said: "Temperatures got down to about minus nine or 10 last night, so they have been very lucky."

The couple, who have not been named, had been due to return at 6 p.m. yesterday but the alarm was raised when they had not re-appeared by 8.40 p.m.
