Paris - Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has set up a 1,000-strong paramilitary unit with the intention of overthrowing Montenegro's government, President Milo Djukanovic has said in an interview with the New York Times.
The special military police unit is contained within the Yugoslav 2nd Army and is made up of Montenegrins led by Serbs loyal to the Yugoslav leader, the Montenegrin President said in the interview.
Montenegro is Serbia's junior partner in the Yugoslav federation, but under Mr Djukanovic has leant towards independence and is coming under increased pressure from Mr Milosevic's government. When Mr Djukanovic ditched the Yugoslav dinar and adopted the German mark to fight inflation, Mr Milosevic halted financial transfers and began an economic blockade along its border, increasing shortages for Montenegro's 650,000 inhabitants.
