Mexico City - Mexico expelled 40 Italian human rights observers early yesterday for exceeding the specified time limit on their visas, a government official said.

The Italians were the last remaining members of a total of 134 Italian human rights observers, including four parliamentarians, who travelled last week to the troubled southern state of Chiapas. They left the country four hours after their visas expired.

Mexico has expelled some 50 foreigners from Chiapas this year on charges of meddling in politics.
