MEXICO CITY - A giant volcano near Mexico's capital erupted suddenly yesterday, sending clouds of ash and smoke 3 km high, but officials said nearby residents were not in immediate danger.

The Popocatepetl volcano, in a mountain range 32 km south east of Mexico City, erupted without warning yesterday at 9.05 a.m.
