THE Government would be "ducking its responsibilities" if it refused to send an observer to Derry for the Apprentice Boys march tomorrow, Ms Nuala Ahern MEP (Green Party), has said.

In the light of the "politically vacuous response by the Irish Government", Ms Ahern said as a member of the European Parliament, she would be travelling to Derry to act as an observer, in response to the request of local residents.

If the political authorities of Northern Ireland could not uphold the norms of civilised society, people were entitled to appeal to supranational organisations such as the EU or the UN, Ms Ahern said.

"People must express their identities without racist or sectarian incitements to violence, and this can only be done through structures which guarantee people equality under the law," she said.
