Iarnrod Eireann and Bus Eireann have taken measures to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease via trains and buses. Rail passengers are being asked to use mats treated with disinfectant before boarding and are urged not to bring food with them. A spokeswoman said staff were handing out information leaflets at stations. All food served on northbound trains is from the Republic, said the company.

Bus Eireann, meanwhile, has asked passengers to be understanding about delays due to Department of Agriculture and Garda checkpoints in areas where foot-and-mouth is a concern.
