An attempt by the Fine Gael MEP, Ms Mary Banotti, to tone down a European Parliament resolution critical of conditions in Mountjoy Prison was foiled yesterday by the Green MEP, Ms Patricia McKenna, who insisted that there had been no improvement, Joe Carroll reports from Strasbourg.
The resolution condemning conditions in some English, French, Italian and Dutch prisons, as well as Mountjoy, called on governments to ensure that the "minimum rules" of the Council of Europe were applied.
