Independent TD Finian McGrath has urged people to “park their anger and hurt” over decisions taken by the Government and to examine the Lisbon Treaty on its merits.
Mr McGrath, who voted No in the last Lisbon referendum and currently says he does not know which way he will be voting on October 2nd, was speaking on RTÉ radio this morning.
He rejected suggestions that he was looking for something from Government in return for a Yes vote.
"I'm furious about the banking situation and the developers and some of the mad political decisions that have been made in this country," he said. "What I'm saying to the don't know voters is let's look at the Treaty itself, let's look at whether it's in the best interests of the country. I care passionately about our country."
Mr McGrath said he had "serious concerns" during the last Lisbon referendum about the lack of an Irish voice in the European Commission, the threat to Irish neutrality, tax issues, workers' rights and the threat to the Oireachtas.
"Now, this time, having followed the talks in Europe and the legal guarantees I feel I have a duty and responsibility as a member of the Oireachtas to look at these proposals very seriously and I've met the Minister for Foreign Affairs," he said. I feel the debate is bigger than me and I feel I have to put the interests of the Irish people first."
Asked whether he was veering towards a Yes vote, Mr McGrath said some of his concerns had been met and that he would be announcing his decision over the coming days.
