A number of councillors were tonight elected mayors around the State.
In the west, Fine Gael candidate Cllr Padraig Conneely was tonight elected mayor of Galway city.
Cllr Conneely, who was put forward as an agreed candidate under a Fine Gael-Labour-Green Party pact, saw off Cllr Michael Crowe (FF) by eight votes to seven.
Cllr Crowe was the candidate proposed by Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats.
Elsewhere, Fianna Fáil councillor Patrick O’Donoghue was elected unopposed as mayor of Killarney after receiving the unanimous support of his fellow councillors.
Mr O'Donoghue, a hotelier and Fáilte Ireland director, has appeared at Killarney District Court on two summonses alleging breaches of the local government and ethics Acts on foot of a rezoning motion. His case has been sent to the Circuit Criminal Court.
Mr O'Donoghue, who was the outgoing deputy mayor, has consistently maintained that he acted at all times openly and in good faith.
In Limerick independent Cllr John Gilligan became the city’s mayor after serving as a councillor for 18 years, Cllr Brian Bermingham was elected mayor of Cork, while Cllr Veronica Cawley rose to the post in Sligo.
