A Mayo man has been found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting a child more than 20 years ago.
The man (58), who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court on four counts of raping and four counts of indecently assaulting the victim on dates from April 1979 to June 1986 in Co Mayo.
The jury's verdicts were returned on day-five of the hearing and following almost five hours deliberation. The six men and six women also spent one night in a hotel.
Mr Justice Peter Charleton directed that the man be registered as a sex offender and remanded him in custody for sentence later.
The man had originally faced a total of 40 charges but the judge withdrew five of them following legal discussion at the end of the evidence. He was acquitted of the remaining 13 charges of sexual assault and 14 charges of rape.
Mr Justice Charleton thanked the jurors for their care and attention to what he said was a difficult case and exempted they from further jury service for five years.
