More than 3,500 homes in north Mayo were without an electricity supply for a number of hours yesterday. The entire island of Achill was affected, as were the surrounding areas of Ballycroy and Mulranney.

ESB area supervisor for Mayo Mr Martin McLoughlin said a break in a circuit was the cause of the disruption. "The fault was repaired by ESB crew and a full service was restored to the areas affected within a few hours," he explained.
