Mathematics has an unfair image as "a stationary, even moribund subject, with the unaltered truth passed on from generation to generation," says Dr Timothy Murphy, of the mathematics department at Trinity College Dublin. Instead, he says, "it is probably the most rapidly changing science of all".

To boost the image of the subject and of physics, an open day will be held at TCD next Saturday, organised jointly by the departments of mathematics and physics. Schools which visit the open day will get a free Redhat Linux CD. Dr Murphy can be contacted at: tim@maths.tcd.ie
