Nathan Spooner was instrumental in Mary's success, as he converted twice from Jonathan Ellis and Conor McPhillips tries plus two converted penalties.

Eoghan Hickey had opened the scoring for UCD before David Blaney got over the line for their first try with Hickey converting.

A Louis Burke try, which Hickey again converted, ensured a close contest throughout was maintained.

Shannon also harbour hopes of a play-off place after a comfortable 10-31 win over Blackrock at Stradbrook.

A Michael Carroll try assisted the home side's surprise 10-6 half-time lead but Shannon soon stamped their authority in the second period.

Andrew Thompson was on target with the boot and got to within a point after converting his third penalty shortly after the break.

It opened the floodgates as David Quinlan, Eddie Halvey and John Lacey all scored second-half tries with Thompson scoring 16 points in all.

Elsewhere Belfast Harlequins travelled to Terenure for their AIL Division One tie and notched up a 14-23 victory over the hosts despite trailing for most of the game.

A Philip Costello try put Terenure ahead early in the second half, a lead which was to be maintained until the dying minutes.

With just five minutes to go Harlequins, trailing 14-13, stepped up a gear and an AJ Derwin and Reith Botha tries secured full points from what had been a close fought contest.
