British Labour Party bosses in Mr Peter Mandelson's Hartlepool constituency tonight confirmed that the former Northern Ireland Secretary would stand as their candidate in the next general election.
The announcement was made by the chairman of the constituency Labour Party, Mr Ray Waller, following a 90-minute meeting with Mr Mandelson at his house in Hartlepool.
Mr Mandelson evaded the waiting media.
