Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy is hoping that a scan on Jason McAteer's injured knee reveals nothing more than bruising.

Sunderland midfielder McAteer was taken to hospital for a scan after a reckless tackle on him during Ireland's 2-1 win over Sanfrecce Hiroshima today which at first left McCarthy fearing his player had suffered medial ligament damage.

McCarthy he is hoping for good news from the scan, and that McAteer will recover in time for that Cameroon clash.

"It was a bad tackle, there is no doubt about that, and Jason has got a bruised knee," he said. "He got a hell of a bad kick and he has got a sore knee. He sat in the dressing room with his head down and he is despondent, but I sincerely hope he will be okay.

"We shall have to wait until it settles down but we don't think there is any ligament damage, although we are taking him for a scan."

Hiroshima defender Bilong, who tackled McAteer, waited outside the Irish dressing room to apologise, but McCarthy was not in a very forgiving mood.

He said: "I don't think he'll be welcome in our dressing room to apologise somehow. Irrespective of it being mis-timed or with malice, it was a bad tackle and there was no need for it in a friendly match."

Apart from McAteer there were knocks for Kevin Kilbane and Ian Harte, but McCarthy is confident they are not serious and he was otherwise happy with the afternoon's work.

He said: "Kevin has got a little twist on his ankle and Ian has got a sore foot but they will be fine.

"It was a worthwhile exercise in terms of fitness and the shape of their team. We needed a game and my expectation was to give the players a good workout and avoid injuries, so I am afraid the latter one has been something of a disappointment.

"I thought we got stronger in the second half, but they have to get used to taking a drink when the ball goes out of play because when you lose fluid you get fatigued and your concentration goes."

Ireland went behind to a soft goal after 37 minutes following some sloppy work in defence. But Robbie Keane equlaised four minutes before the break.

The Leeds United striker then grabbed the winner in the 78th minute following good support play from Mark Kinsella and Niall Quinn.

Meanwhile, it was confirmed today that Toru Kamikawa from Japan will referee Ireland's opening Group E match against Cameroon next Saturday, June 1st.
