A 30-year-old man with 65 previous convictions has been jailed for seven months for stealing an elderly woman’s purse at a railway station.

Brian Ward, of Tierboy Estate, Tuam, went to help the woman when she fell on steps leading to Ceannt railway station in Galway city on May 6th last but then he noticed her purse had fallen out of her handbag, took it and ran off.

He pleaded guilty to the theft at Galway District Court where Judge Mary Fahy told him this was “the lowest of the low” type of crime involving an elderly person.
