Gardaí in Cork have opened an investigation after a man was shot dead in Carrigaline this afternoon.

The man (37) was shot dead in a house in the Ashbourne Court estate on Ferney Road, Carrigaline, shortly before 3pm.

Gardaí have cordoned off the scene for forensic examination by a technical team.

It is understood the man is not from the area and was known to gardaí.

He lived in the rented house with his partner and child. His partner is said to have found his body when she returned home this afternoon.

The victim has been named locally as Darren Falsey.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area between 2pm and 3pm to contact Togher Garda station on 021-4947120, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
