A publican's son was shot by armed raiders after he disturbed them ransacking the family-run premises early yesterday morning.

The Garda has appealed for information on the raid, which occurred just before 4 a.m. at Donoghue's Pub, Drumconrath, Navan, Co Meath. They suspect the gang of three or four men was looking for the takings after the holiday weekend.

Mr Sean Donoghue (24) was shot in the abdomen and underwent emergency surgery in Our Lady's Hospital, Navan. A hospital spokeswoman said he had been seriously injured and described his condition as critical. i The Garda said about £350 cash, a rifle and two handbags were stolen.

It is not clear in which direction the gang left as the pub is on a junction of four roads which lead to Kells, Ardee, Kingscourt and Slane. Garda Insp Liam Conlon, Navan, appealed for anyone with information to contact the Gardai at 046-21445.
