A DUBLIN man told gardaí he did not know how he could live with himself after he allegedly slashed his best friend’s throat in a row over a pint, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has heard.

Luke Walsh (23), Broadfield Drive, Ballinteer, told gardaí in a voluntary statement made the day after the incident two years ago that he accepted he had hit Colin Doyle with the glass, even though he could not remember doing it.

He said he was remorseful, adding: “I don’t know if I can live with myself after everything Colin has done for me.”

However, Mr Walsh gave evidence at his assault trial yesterday that he could not remember what had happened and refused to accept he attacked Mr Doyle.

In his statement to gardaí, read to the jury by Monika Leech, prosecuting, he said Mr Doyle was his best friend whom he had known for five years at the time.

Mr Walsh has pleaded not guilty to assault causing harm to Mr Doyle at the Rockfield Lounge, Dundrum, on March 5th, 2009.

Mr Walsh took the stand and told Patrick Reynolds, defending, that all he could remember was sitting down in the pub and his friend starting to hit him.

The case before Judge Joseph Matthews and the jury will resume on Monday with closing speeches.
