Coastguards rescued a 63-year-old man stranded at the bottom of cliffs on the Co Antrim coast last night.

The alert was raised by a member of the public after the man was spotted shouting and waving for help near Ballycastle.

The victim, who was not injured, had been there for several hours, having been unable to scale the rock face, and faced spending the night outside as darkness fell.

Coastguards lowered two men down, who helped him to safety at around 10pm. He had been there since 6.30pm.

Steve Carson, Duty Watch Manager, Belfast Coastguard, said: "Cliffs can be a dangerous environment and we would strongly encourage people of any age not to put themselves at risk.

"Thankfully this man was spotted and has been rescued." Ballycastle Coastguard rescue team and the Redbay RNLI inshore lifeboat attended.
