Man remanded over Dublin assault

A Canadian man has been charged in connection with an assault in central Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Simon Mercier (23), of Avenue Compognon, Quebec, was charged at Dublin District Court with assaulting Guillane Osterstock (26) and causing him harm on Temple Lane in Temple Bar.

Mr Osterstock, a French national, was taken to St James's Hospital before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Garda Barry Keegan, from Pearse Street Garda station, gave evidence during the hearing before Judge Aingeal Ní Chondúin.

A second man, also in his 20s, remains in custody in connection with the incident.

Mr Mercier was remanded in custody until August 17th to appear before Cloverhill District Court.
