A man charged with the murder of nightclub security man Brian Fitzgerald in Limerick nearly four years ago has been further remanded in custody.

Businessman Anthony Kelly (49), Cragg House, Kilrush, Co Clare, was appearing yesterday before Judge Aeneas McCarthy at Limerick District Court.

He is charged with the murder of Mr Fitzgerald (34) at Brookhaven Walk, Mill Road, Corbally, on November 29th, 2002.

Gardaí made an application to the court yesterday to adjourn the matter for a month to allow the book of evidence to be prepared.

Mr Kelly's solicitor, Eugene O'Kelly, said his client would be contesting the charge against him, which he said was unfounded.

Mr O'Kelly told the court he would be making an application to the High Court next week for bail.

He had already unsuccessfully attempted to bring a bail application. He was advised that bail applications on murder charges were matters for the High Court.

Judge McCarthy consented to yesterday's Garda application, and remanded Mr Kelly in custody to appear before Limerick District Court on November 21st.

Mr Fitzgerald, a father of two, was shot dead outside his home as he returned from work in Doc's nightclub in Limerick city nearly four years ago.

The killing of the security man prompted one of the biggest investigations in the history of the Limerick Garda division.

James Martin Cahill from Birmingham, England, is currently serving a life sentence for his role in the murder.
