A man whose daughter had a child by him after continuous rape has been jailed for 12 years by Mr Justice Carney.

The 44-year-old defendant pleaded guilty in June to six counts of raping his daughter, now aged 18, in his home in the west of Ireland during the period 1995-1997. Mr Justice Carney said there was little he could find in the defendant's favour apart from his guilty pleas. He had gravely abused a position of trust.

Mr Padraic O'Higgins SC, defending, said his client had a difficulty with drink and this may have dulled his sense of responsibility.
