A man who completed only 84 of 240 hours' community service imposed on him for sexual assault has been jailed for 18 months by Mr Justice Carney at the Central Criminal Court.

Rory Condra (26), of Leinster Road, Rathmines, was found guilty in February 1998 of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in September 1995. Mr Justice Carney imposed 240 hours' community service or two years' imprisonment in default.

After a five-day trial in 1998 Condra was found not guilty of rape and oral rape of the woman in a flat in Drogheda.

When the jury had returned its verdict Mr Justice Carney said the jury had found Condra not guilty of the rape charges but convicted him of the "fallback" charge of sexual assault.
