An American man wanted in the United States over a fatal hit-and-run is to make further submissions to the High Court in a bid to block his extradition, it emerged today.

Frederick Russell (27) is wanted to stand trial for the deaths of three students killed in a high-speed car crash in Washington State.

He fled the United States and went on the run for four years after being charged in relation to the accident.

Since last autumn in a long running High Court action, Mr Russell has been battling moves to have him returned to the United States. Following several days of hearings, he today applied for a further sitting of the court for legal argument.

It is understood his legal team will make submissions regarding the speciality rule following two recent extradition cases in the English courts.

The rule is designed to ensure that people who are extradited can only stand trial for the offence on which their extradition was ordered.

Mr Justice Michael Peart granted Mr Russell's legal team one further day in the High Court, and the judge also revealed Mr Russell's mother and his fiancee had written two letters to him.

He warned that although he only read the first line of each letter that identified the authors, it was an entirely inappropriate move.

Mr Justice Peart told Russell's barrister, Kathleen Leader SC, that the letters would be returned.

The case will come before the High Court again next Monday.
