Australian police today arrested a man they say may be involved in the disappearance of British tourist Peter Falconio.

Police swooped on the 25-year-old man, named in reports as Andrew Craig Heffernan, at 9.30 a.m. (12.30 a.m. Irish time) in a caravan park in Tomago, around 90 miles north of Sydney, New South Wales Police said.

He is being questioned over the fatal stabbing of chef Stuart Rhodes, 39, whose body was found next to the Stuart Highway in the Outback, around 220 miles down the road from where Mr Falconio was last seen three weeks ago.

A spokeswoman for Northern Territories Police said detectives had not ruled out a link between the killing of Mr Rhodes and the Falconio case. She said: ``We haven't ruled out a link.

``Although, at this stage, there is no evidence to say the man arrested this morning is connected to the disappearance of Mr Falconio.''

Mr Falconio, 28, of Hepworth, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, was last seen on July 14 when it is thought he was shot by a gunman who attacked him and his girlfriend Joanne Lees, 27.

The attacker kidnapped Ms Lees, but she escaped and contacted police. One of Australia's biggest manhunts has failed to find Mr Falconio.
