GARDAÍ IN Tipperary have begun a murder investigation after a man was stabbed to death in the village of Lattin in the southwest of the county on Sunday evening.

Seán Murphy (29), a father of two, was from Tipperary town. He had moved to live in Lattin – about five miles away – with his partner and children. He died outside his house some time after 9.30pm after being stabbed during an altercation.

A man in his 40s was arrested shortly after the incident and held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act for questioning at Tipperary Garda station. Gardaí said they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.

The area around the house was sealed off for examination by a Garda forensics team. Mr Murphy’s body, which had remained at the scene overnight, was removed just before noon yesterday.

It was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Tipperary town councillor Billy Bourke expressed his sympathy to Mr Murphy’s parents and family and described the Murphys as a “very quiet, hard-working family”.

Fr Séamus Rochford, parish priest of Emly, said the violent death of Mr Murphy had created “a sense of shock in the small rural community” in west Tipperary.

He expressed his sympathy to “both families involved in the tragic incident”.
