A Dublin man has successfully appealed the severity of his 14-year sentence for the fatal stabbing of another man outside a party.

Stephen Kelly (23) of Westpark, Artane, Dublin, was found not guilty in December 2002 of murder but guilty of the manslaughter of Jonathan Guy (21), Belcamp Crescent, Priorswood, outside a house at Newgrove estate, Donaghmede, Dublin, in March 2001.

The Court of Criminal Appeal today reduced the sentence from 14 years to eight. In assessing a range of sentences for manslaughter, the court stressed that Irish law requires an individual approach to sentencing.

Mr Jonathan Guy spent a week in Beaumont Hospital after suffering the fatal wound to his chest, which penetrated his heart and lungs. He died as a result of his injuries on March 11th.
