A Belarussian man has applied for political asylum in Donegal, after he was found by a local fisherman and his son as he emerged from the sea at Port, near Glencolumbcille. The man, who has not been named and speaks almost no English, is assumed to have jumped from a passing ship. No boat was seen in the area.

The man and his son were about to start fishing at 6.30 a.m. yesterday when they spotted the Belarussian. They took him home and gave him dry clothes before calling gardai at Glenties. He was taken to the Garda station. It is believed he had a note with him saying he wanted to apply for political asylum.

The application will now be dealt with by the Department of Justice. The North Western Health Board is looking after the man.
