The Dublin man who attempted suicide in St Patrick's Institution on Tuesday night died yesterday in the Mater Hospital. Mr Patrick Dunne (19), Coolock, was committed to St Patrick's in January of this year on a 21-month sentence for trespass and larceny and was due for release in August of next year. He was in a single cell.

In a statement last night, the Department of Justice confirmed that a male prisoner had been found hanging in his cell in St Patrick's and had died yesterday.

"In accordance with normal procedures, the gardai are investigating the death and, of course, a full coroner's inquest will be held. The circumstances of the prisoner's death will also be examined by the suicide awareness group in St Patrick's Institution in accordance with the recommendations made in the 1991 report of the advisory group on prison deaths."
