A care worker is to be sentenced later this year for a sexual assault on a young man who uses a wheelchair because of cerebral palsy.

A jury was sworn in yesterday to try the 38-year-old defendant on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of the victim. However, following negotiations between the prosecution and defence he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence.

He admitted two counts of sexually assaulting the victim, who is in his 20s, on July 28th and 29th, 1997. The name of the defendant and the location of the offences have not been published to protect the identity of the victim.

Prosecution counsel Mr Des O'Neill requested the preparation of a victim impact report. The court was told there was no Garda objection to continuing bail.
